Location, location, location-

Sunshine is precious and important to your fall blooms. As the days become shorter, be sure to choose areas of your yard that receive at least six hours of full sun per day. The daily dose of sunshine will encourage full blooms and help to dry out the soil after heavy fall rain.

Popular Fall Varieties-

Breathe new life into your garden beds by removing spent spring and summer plants and prepare the soil by adding organic matter and all-purpose fertilizer. Take advantage of a mild day from mid-August to mid-September to plant new flowering plants and perennials in order to enjoy fresh blooms now and up through the first frosts. Chrysanthemums are always a local favorite but asters, pansies and violas are great choices as well. Vibrant perennials such as boltonia and sedum offer complementary purple, pink and white blooms.

Frost Tolerant Annuals-

Add bright, cheerful pops of color through October by planting new annuals in containers and hanging baskets. Varieties such as snapdragon, diascia, and verbena are frost tolerant and are a great addition to any welcoming porch. Don’t rule out adding additional form and texture with ornamental grasses and flowering cabbages and kale. Be sure to add a water-soluble fertilizer along with fresh potting soil to give your containers plants the best start to the season.

We hope these fall bloom ideas inspire you to rejuvenate your yard and garden and provide another season of enjoyment to your outdoor space.
