The Benefits of Planting Native

Native plants versus invasive plants, you may have heard of the great debate before but why should you or anyone else care? As it turns out making the decision to plant native supports your ecosystem which pretty much classifies you as a superhero. Do you think we may be exaggerating? Making the choice to plant native in your yard supports a delicate balance that benefits the tiniest fly all the way to the food you serve at your dinner table. In honor of the everyday superhero within you and keeping with the theme of landscaping to save the environment, Highlands Landscape would like to share the top 3 benefits of planting native in your yard.

Benefit of Planting Native #1

Planting native will save water and in turn, will save you money. Native plants have adapted and thrived in their environments for thousands of years and they know your backyard even better than you. They are already perfectly selected and suited for everything from the climate, average rainfall, and the unique properties of the soil meaning that they don’t need much help to stay healthy and beautiful. Native plants don’t require supplemental watering, fertilizers, or pesticides making them wonderfully cost efficient. Even better, the less chemicals we can use in our yards and gardens will create even better health for us by reducing the amount that we are exposed to either through direct contact or through our water system.

Benefit of Planting Native #2

The simple act of choosing to plant native in your yard supports the entire ecosystem (insert superhero cape here). Native plants and species have lived together symbiotically for long before we showed up and they need each other to coexist. The plants provide food and shelter, the birds and bees provide pollination for the plants which even supports the produce on our own tables. Some species can be very particular, they only want to build homes or feed from the same plants that they have known for thousands of years. Limited access to these native plants means the species will go elsewhere or worse yet, fail to thrive. It’s no question that this is now “mans” world as in humans and we control the landscape, it is our responsibility to keep the ecosystem balanced. The easiest and most simple way to do your part to save the planet is to choose a beautiful variety of native plants for your outdoor space.

Benefit of Planting Native #3

A native landscape is a beautiful landscape. There is something especially beautiful about looking out your front door and seeing parts of the landscape just as your very distant relatives must have seen it. Each particular region has a large variety of native plants to choose from and the design possibilities are endless. Adding a new planting bed of native plants to your yard will add value to your home and make your backyard more enjoyable by attracting birds and butterflies.
